Who needs Psychoeducational Testing?

Testing can be helpful if your child is having challenges at school or if you suspect hidden strengths. Who completes the evaluations?

A licensed or certified psychologist, a license-eligible clinician, or a graduate level student working toward a higher degree may conduct the evaluation. The evaluator reviews educational, social, and medical history, administers assessments, writes a report, and shares findings with the parent.

What’s the testing process like?

Step 1 is an initial consult to discuss concerns, goals, and the process. Step 2 includes one-on-one testing sessions with tasks such as cognitive tests, academic assessments, and questionnaires. Step 3 includes parent and teacher input through surveys or interviews. Step 4 is results and recommendations, where findings are reviewed and actionable recommendations are provided.

How long does the evaluation take?

Comprehensive psycho-educational testing sessions are usually 4 to 6 hours, with breaks as needed and the option to split sessions across days. Other evaluations such as dyslexia, ADHD, and basic psycho-educational testing typically range from 2 to 4 hours.

How long does it take to test and get the report?

From start to finish, the process typically takes about 2 to 4 weeks.

What can testing tell me about my child?

Testing can provide insight into learning profiles such as specific learning disability, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia, as well as ADHD, autism spectrum challenges, anxiety or mood concerns, and intellectual strengths such as giftedness.

What about accommodations for School or College?

Evaluations are often used to secure IEPs, 504 Plans, or accommodations for standardized tests such as extra time on the SAT. Reports are thorough and clear and are commonly respected by schools and testing agencies.

How much does it cost? Will my insurance cover it?

If you provide insurance information, eligibility for reimbursement can be checked, but coverage is not guaranteed and reimbursement decisions are made by the insurance company. Payment is still required because insurance is not accepted directly. After testing, necessary documents are provided to seek reimbursement. Flexible, no-interest payment plans may be available, and many families use HSA or FSA funds to cover costs.

Will this really help my child at school?

Yes. Reports are written to be clear and actionable for teachers and school staff and to meet requirements for school systems. They include recommendations to support IEPs or 504 Plans, and collaboration with your school team may be available upon request.

What’s the best way to explain this to my child?

A simple and upbeat explanation can help: “We’re going to meet someone who will play some fun games and puzzles with you to see how your brain works. It’s not a test you can pass or fail. It’s just to help us understand what you’re great at and where you might need help.”

Can we do sessions on weekends?

Yes, services are offered on weekdays and weekends.

What happens after the evaluation?

After the evaluation, a 1-hour feedback meeting is scheduled with the parent to review results. This can be completed virtually or in person.

What should I expect in the feedback session?

During the feedback session, results and any diagnosis are reviewed, strengths and challenges are explained clearly, and practical recommendations and strategies are provided for school and home. You also receive a Comprehensive Written Report for your records.

What tests do you use?

High-quality, research-backed assessments are used to ensure accuracy and reliability. Examples include WISC, WIAT, BASC, KTEA, and Conners-4, selected based on your child’s specific concerns and goals.

What is the Ideal Age for Gifted Evaluation?

The most reliable predictive age for a gifted evaluation is around age 6. Generally, between ages 6 and 8, intelligence scores are relatively stable, making that range especially useful for accurate results.

Do you accept HSA or FSA payments for psychoeducational testing?

Yes. Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account funds can be used to pay for psychoeducational testing because these evaluations are considered qualified medical expenses.
